Having been market leaders for most of that time, there is one question that we are commonly asked by those outside of the industry. ‘ What is the difference between a Chauffeur and a Close Protection driver?’.
As we bring our time exhibiting at Close Protection World 2024 to a close, we thought it would be an ideal time to address this commonly asked question.
It is fair to say that the main differences between a chauffeur and a close protection driver lie in their training, responsibilities, and focus on safety. Chauffeurs are trained primarily in customer service, etiquette and providing a comfortable and smooth driving experience for their customers, whilst always maintaining a high standard of professionalism and discretion. Whilst they are skilled drivers, their training typically doesn’t include advanced security or tactical driving techniques. Close Protection Drivers, on the other hand, have to undergo extensive specialised training in security, defensive driving, evasive manoeuvres, and handling high-stress and fast response scenarios to protect clients from potential threats, hostile situations and to handle emergencies accordingly.
Close Protection Drivers are expected to maintain a heightened level of situational awareness and they regularly work in coordination with a close protection team -communicating and coordinating with bodyguards and other security personnel. They play an integral role in the client’s protection strategy and follow strict protocols to ensure seamless security operations. They’re trained to identify and avoid potentially dangerous situations, often pre-planning routes for maximum safety and creating contingency plans for in the case of any emergency. Chauffeurs generally operate independently or may work as part of a luxury transport service, without involvement in a security team, they are not usually trained to handle or anticipate security threats, their awareness is typically to provide a safe and comfortable driving experience whilst complying with all traffic regulations.
Additionally a Chauffeur’s primary role will include journey planning to ensure they remain punctual and get clients to their destination in a timely manner, assisting with tasks like luggage handling and opening doors for their customers. Whilst a Close Protection driver will offer all of these services, they will also have more of an acute focus on their responsibility towards the safety of their clients- which could range from high level security officials and diplomats, aswel as celebrities or security conscious individuals.
Throughout most regions in the UK, a Private Hire License is required for chauffeurs despite the vehicles often being able to obtain exemptions for plates/stickers etc. For a Close Protection driver, a Private Hire License is not necessarily required, instead you would require a Security Industry Authority (SIA) or Close Protection (CP) License. The SIA CP license certifies that you’ve met the necessary standards for operating in close protection, covering both physical protection and secure driving. However, it’s worth noting that if you’re transporting clients in a private hire capacity (like chauffeuring clients outside of a close protection job), most regions will require a private hire license for legal reasons. One similarity both Chauffeurs and Close protection driver’s share is their choice of vehicles. Typically, both vocations use vehicles that not only provide comfort and luxury but also a combination of safety, durability, and performance – as all of these qualities enhance the client’s experience. On occasion Close Protection Drivers might operate armoured or specially modified vehicles to handle particularly dangerous situations or to fulfil client requests however within the UK there are currently less than 15 armoured vehicles available, so this is a particularly niche market.
